Teen Titans comics

Raven has been a prominent member of The New Teen Titans, and is currently a member of the modern Teen Titans. Raven is an empath, she can teleport, and send out her Soul Self which can fight physically as well as act as Raven’s eyes and ears away from her body. She has telekinesis, which enables her to control anything by her mind.

A dark, moody character, Raven is the half-breed daughter of a human mother named Arella and the demon overlord Trigon. She grew up in a pacifist place called Azarath, where she was taught to “control her emotions” in order to suppress and control her inherited demonic powers.

Eventually she learned that Trigon was planning to come to her dimension and vowed to stop him. She initially approached the Justice League, but they refused her on the advice of Zatanna who sensed her demonic parentage. In desperation, she reformed the Titans as the New Teen Titans to fight her father.

The team was eventually able to defeat Trigon and seal him in an interdimensional prison. However, Raven still had to fight her father’s influence, as he was not completely destroyed. More than once, Raven nearly lost control in various high stress situations in her adventures and barely regained it before Trigon could reassert.

Trigon eventually escaped, came to Earth and took control of Raven. Azarath was destroyed in the process. The Titans came together and killed Raven. This allowed the souls of Azarath to possess her and use her as a channel to kill Trigon. Afterwards, Raven was presumed dead, but she actually rose from ashes of the battle, finally purged of Trigon’s evil. She vanished, and her mother went looking for her.

Raven was then captured by Brother Blood’s minions to control Nightwing as part of Brother Blood’s resurrection. The Titans rescued them both and prevented Brother Blood from returning. Raven donned a new white cloak to represent her being free from her father’s influence.

The Titans were eventually captured by the Wildebeest Society, but were rescued by a group of heroes. The leader of the Wildebeest Society was actually their teammate, Jericho, who was inhabited by the souls of Azarath. Jericho tried to use the Titans as vessels for the souls, but in the end was killed by his father, Deathstroke.

Later, another version of Raven appeared, this time, possessed by her evil conscience. She attempted to implant seeds of Trigon’s children into new bodies. She crashed the wedding of Nightwing and Starfire, and implanted one of the seeds into her. However, she actually implanted the seed of the good Raven, which caused Starfire to leave Earth in order to escape from Raven. Raven then implanted seeds into several superheroes. The Titans were able to defeat her with the help of Phantasm.

Raven returned later, still evil, in order to destroy her good self which she had implanted in Starfire. The Titans defeated her once again, for the last time. The good Raven was instilled into a new golden spirit body.

As a spirit, Raven wandered Earth, looking for her place in the world, when Brother Blood came to claim her. Her spirit was instilled into the body of a teenage girl by the Church of Blood. The Teen Titans (reformed again), discovered that the Church of Blood were worshippers of Raven’s father, Trigon. They also found a prophecy which told of the marriage between Brother Blood and Raven that would result in Armageddon. The new team interrupted the wedding, and Raven forced the cult to escape. She then joined the new Teen Titans and enrolled at a high school as Rachel Roth to honor her mother.

The recent “Titans of Tomorrow” storyline showed a possible dystopian future, where Raven became the Dark Raven and gathered Superman II (Kon-El, formerly Superboy), Wonder Woman IV (Cassie Sandsmark, formerly Wonder Girl II), Batman IV (Tim Drake, formerly Robin III), Animal Man II (Gar Logan, formerly Beast Boy), and Aquawoman (Lorena Marquez, formerly Aquagirl II) to continue the heroic crusade, but using ruthless, murderous tactics.

After the recent events of both the Teen Titans and the Outsiders joining to combat two of their own teammates (one being Superboy), Raven went to help Superboy understand that he had a soul. Later, she was attacked by the villain Kestrel. When Hell’s gates were broken, Brother Blood escaped along with his newly appointed mother, Omen.

She has recently become romantically attached to Beast Boy. Raven had been developing feelings for him since her recent rebirth. Writer Geoff Johns confirmed also that this relationship had long been implemented by him before the animated series began, squashing any previous speculation that this relationship was created out of influence by the shipper community.
Teen Titans animated series

In the Teen Titans animated series (2003-present), Raven (with a dry, throaty voice provided by Tara Strong) appears much younger (as do all the other characters) than in the comic book variants, though her costume is relatively unchanged. However, her skirt was changed to a leotard by the animators to avoid several animation complications. She also wears a chain belt around her waist as well. She also has light grey skin and short, violet hair. Raven’s personality is also more child-like and emotional, and slightly more gothic. Raven is straightforward and moody, as well as sarcastic. She has a dry sense of humor. However, she does show signs that she cares very much for her friends.

In addition to an affinity for magic and spell casting, Raven possesses powerful psychokinetic abilities which manifest in the form of Dark Energy, which serve as her primary means of attack and defense. She can use her abilities to levitate objects, project concussive blasts, and form simple shapes like grappling hands and razor sharp plates. Raven can use her dark energy to create portals to phase through solid barriers like floors and wall. In “Car Trouble”, after Cyborg’s newly built T-Car was stolen, and he’s lamenting about how the loss hurts him emotionally as he had put his own circuits into it, Raven admits she sympathizes: When I use my powers, I have to put a little of my soul into whatever I’m moving. I become a part of it, and it becomes a part of me.

In addition, the animated version of Raven sometimes says the phrase “Azarath Metrion Zinthos” to help her focus her powers. These words are her mantra, and although no one knows exactly what they mean, it is definite that Azarath is her home dimension (or more accurately, the dimension of her birth), in the show and the comics. She has to meditate daily to make sure her emotions remain in check and do not clash with her sense of right and wrong.

Raven can also manifest an astral body called her “soul-self”, which is a part of her. Her soul-self is not recognized by name in the animation, but it is featured; it normally takes the form of either her human shape or a giant raven. Through the use of her soul-self, Raven can project her consciousness into the mind, for therapeutic purposes (to aid in her own meditation, or to help calm an agitated ally), or for offensive attacks, rendering her enemies unconscious. It also serves as a way to travel into other dimensions. When Raven is highly upset, her soul-self can also transform her body’s appearance to a variety of demonic forms and sizes. Worst of all, when she can’t control her anger, she transforms into a demonic Raven usually with four glowing, red eyes and sprouting black tentacles from under her cloak, also referred to by fans as “Red Raven”, “Angry Raven”, or “Evil Raven”. The four eyes seem to symbolize her demon father, Trigon — when Cyborg was infected with a virus, she threatened Gizmo into helping by powering up and pulling down her hood. The face was not shown, but it appeared to be a dragon’s head with tentacles. The dragon head was probably an innuendo of Satan, because he is sometimes called “The Great Crimson Dragon”.

In one episode Raven was taught various magical tricks by the dragon, Malchior. These new abilities were given light by the fact that Raven once again began wearing her all white outfit. During this time she was able to teleport herself from the Titans’ Tower right next to her opponent Cardiac, was able to control Beast Boy’s transformation abilities by forcefully turning him into a rat and attacked Malchior by summoning black lightening from the sky. Later on her white cloak transforms back into its original blue color symbolizing the loss of her new abilities.

Raven often worries that her fellow Titans don’t like her, possibly because she is the daughter of a demon and has a complex lifestyle that her friends don’t understand too well. Her room inside Titans Tower is decorated with things from her past, as well as statues and pictures about of the creepy-crawlies her powers like to conjure up. Not surprisingly, she becomes highly offended when anyone sets foot in it against her will.

As in the comic books, Raven’s arch foe is her father Trigon. She did, however, hold a powerful grudge against Terra and against Dr. Light, as well.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In the first season, episode 6, “Nevermore”: Raven is angered by a villain named Dr. Light and transforms into Red Raven, grabs the villain with her tentacles and drags him under her cloak, seriously traumatizing the villain. Later Beast Boy and Cyborg find a mirror in her room, which accidentally transports them into her subconscious. Here, they encountered the personified aspects of Raven herself. Each aspect is represented as wearing a different colored robe, including green (bravery), gray (timidity), pink (happiness), orange (rudeness), yellow (intelligence), and others. A red and a black Raven also appeared, fan-speculated as hatred and lust, respectively.

When Raven went after them, she tells them that her dark side was let out by accident and had taken over her other sides. Red Raven (complete with four glowing red eyes) soon gathers herself and transforms into a huge hulking red beast, at which point Beast Boy questions about what is going to happen, and, Raven comments “Let’s just say I have issues with my father,” a hint in the animated series that the beast is a younger incarnation of her father. The white cloak from that episode is seen in at least one episode of season 1, 2, 3, & 4. In Season One’s “Nevermore”, her cloak turns white after she absorbs her other aspects to defeat her mind’s view of Trigon. The cloak was next seen in the first episode of Season Two, “How Long is Forever?”, where Raven’s future self dons the white cloak after losing control of her powers — and her sanity.

In Season Three’s episode “Spellbound”, Raven dons her white attire as a result of her being attracted to the wizard Malchior.

Red Raven was let loose briefly during Raven’s battle with Terra in a giant mud pit (Season 2, “Aftershock Part 1″). After her furious personality was unleashed, she could have presumably killed Terra if she hadn’t restrained herself. However, since enraging Raven was apparently Terra’s plan all along, it is possible that Raven’s anger made her lose the control of her powers needed for a fight against a skilled foe. Whatever t

Tercatat sekitar 50 jenis makanan berformalin beredar di Ibu Kota. Kenyataan ini berdasar uji laboratorium Badan Pengawasan Obat dan Makanan (POM) DKI Jakarta, baru-baru ini. Contoh makanan yang dites berasal dari sejumlah tempat seperti Pasar Muarakarang dan Rawamangun. Rata-rata zat ini dipakai oleh pengusaha kecil dan menengah. Mereka beralasan penggunaan formalin untuk menekan biaya produksi.

Makanan yang paling banyak mengandung formalin ada pada mi basah. Kwe tiauw dan bakso juga mengandung zat kimia yang berbahaya jika dikonsumsi manusia ini. Tak hanya makanan, cairan bernama lain formaldehid itu digunakan pada ikan segar dan asin. Di antaranya asin sotong, sange belah, teri Medan, jambal roti, serta cumi asin.

Formalin diduga digunakan nelayan Indonesia sejak dua tahun silam. Larutan bening ini dipakai untuk menjaga bobot ikan asin. Pembuatan tanpa formalin akan mengurangi bobot ikan asin hingga 60 persen. Sedangkan dengan menggunakan formalin, bobot yang berkurang akibat pengeringan hanya 30 persen

Nelayan juga menggunakan formalin untuk menjaga kesegaran hasil tangkapannya. Sebab, cairan yang mengandung metanol ini lebih murah dibanding menggunakan es. Ikan yang menggunakan formalin bisa dibedakan melalui ciri-ciri fisiknya, yakni bermata merah, insang pucat, dan daging yang kenyal. Selain itu, tubuh ikan bersih cemerlang. Dan, yang paling jelas tak ada lalat yang berani mengerubunginya.

Tahu sebagai makanan bergizi yang murah tak lepas dari zat ini. Padahal makanan empuk ini menjadi teman nasi andalan bagi warga ekonomi miskin. Hampir setengah dari 41 jenis tahu yang beredar di Jakarta mengandung formalin. Di antaranya terdapat pada tahu kuning, tahu putih, tahu Cina, tahu sutra, dan juga tahu telur.

Efeknya ini

Dalam jangka pendek, orang yang sering mengkonsumsi formalin akan mengalami iritasi saluran pernapasan dan muntah-muntah. Korban juga merasa pusing, rasa terbakar pada tenggorokan, dan gatal di dada. Sedangkan jangka panjangnya mengakibatkan kerusakan hati, jantung, otak, limfa, sistem susunan syaraf pusat dan ginjal. Yang paling menakutkan adalah kanker.

“Sebagian besar orang yang melihat belum tentu bergerak, dan yang bergerak belum tentu menyelesaikan (perubahan).”

Kalimat ini mungkin sudah pernah Anda baca dalam buku baru Saya, ChaNge. Dalam sebuah seminar yang diselenggarakan Indosat, iseng-iseng Saya mengeluarkan dua lembaran Rp 50.000. Di tengah-tengah ratusan orang yang tengah menyimak isi buku, Saya tawarkan uang itu. “Silahkan, siapa yang mau boleh ambil.” ujar Saya. Saya menunduk ke bawah menghindari tatapan ke muka audiens sambil menjulurkan uang Rp 100.000.

Seperti yang Saya duga, hampir semua audiens hanya diam terkesima. Saya ulangi kalimat Saya beberapa kali dengan mimik muka yang lebih serius. Beberapa orang tampak tersenyum, ada yang mulai menarik badannya dari sandaran kursi, yang lain lagi menendang kaki temannya. Seorang ibu menyuruh temannya maju, tetapi mereka semua tak bergerak. Belakangan, dua orang pria maju ke depan sambil celingak-celinguk. Orang yang maju dari sisi sebelah kanan mulanya bergerak cepat, tapi ia segera menghentikan langkahnya dan termangu, begitu melihat seseorang dari sisi sebelah kiri lebih cepat ke depan. Ia lalu kembali ke kursinya. Sekarang hanya tinggal satu orang saja yang sudah berada di depan Saya. Gerakannya begitu cepat, tapi tangannya berhenti manakala uang itu disentuhnya. Saya dapat merasakan tarikan uang yang dilakukan dengan keragu-raguan. Semua audiens tertegun.

Saya ulangi pesan Saya, “Silahkan ambil, silahkan ambil”. Ia menatap wajah Saya, dan Saya pun menatapnya dengan wajah lucu. Audiens tertawa melihat keberanian anak muda itu. Saya ulangi lagi kalimat Saya, dan Ia pun merampas uang kertas itu dari tangan Saya dan kembali ke kursinya. Semua audiens tertawa terbahak-bahak. Seseorang lalu berteriak,

“Kembalikan, kembalikan!” Saya mengatakan, “Tidak usah. Uang itu sudah menjadi miliknya.”

Setidaknya, dengan permainan itu seseorang telah menjadi lebih kaya Rp.100.000. Saya tanya kepada mereka, mengapa hampir semua diam, tak bergerak. “Bukankah uang yang Saya sodorkan tadi adalah sebuah kesempatan?” Mereka pun menjawab dengan berbagai alasan:

“Saya pikir Bapak cuma main-main …………”
“Nanti uangnya toh diambil lagi.”
“Malu-maluin aja.”
“Saya tidak mau kelihatan nafsu. Kita harus tetap terlihat cool!”
“Saya enggak yakin bapak benar-benar akan memberikan uang itu …..”
“Pasti ada orang lain yang lebih membutuhkannya….”
“Saya harus tunggu dulu instruksi yang lebih jelas…..”
“Saya takut salah, nanti cuma jadi tertawaan doang………”
“Saya, kan duduk jauh di belakang…”
dan seterusnya.

Saya jelaskan bahwa jawaban mereka sama persis dengan tindakan mereka sehari-hari. Hampir setiap saat kita dilewati oleh rangkaian opportunity (kesempatan), tetapi kesempatan itu dibiarkan pergi begitu saja. Kita tidak menyambarnya, padahal kita ingin agar hidup kita berubah.

Saya jadi ingat dengan ucapan seorang teman yang dirawat di sebuah rumah sakit jiwa di daerah Parung. Ia tampak begitu senang saat Saya dan keluarga membesuknya. Sedih melihat seorang sarjana yang punya masa depan baik terkerangkeng dalam jeruji rumah sakit bersama orang-orang tidak waras. Saya sampai tidak percaya ia berada di situ. Dibandingkan teman-temannya, ia adalah pasien yang paling waras. Ia bisa menilai “gila” nya orang di sana satu persatu dan berbicara waras dengan Saya. Cuma, matanya memang tampak agak merah.

Waktu Saya tanya apakah ia merasa sama dengan mereka, ia pun protes. “Gila aja….ini kan gara-gara saudara-saudara Saya tidak mau mengurus Saya. Saya ini tidak gila. Mereka itu semua sakit…..”. Lantas, apa yang kamu maksud “sakit ?”

“Orang sakit (gila) itu selalu berorientasi ke masa lalu, sedangkan Saya selalu berpikir ke depan. Yang gila itu adalah yang selalu mengharapkan perubahan, sementara melakukan hal yang sama dari hari ke hari…..,” katanya penuh semangat. “Saya pun mengangguk-angguk.

Pembaca, di dalam bisnis, gagasan, pendidikan, pemerintahan dan sebagainya, Saya kira kita semua menghadapi masalah yang sama. Mungkin benar kata teman Saya tadi, kita semua mengharapkan perubahan, tapi kita tak tahu harus mulai dari mana. Akibatnya kita semua hanya melakukan hal yang sama dari hari ke hari, Jadi omong kosong perubahan akan datang. Perubahan hanya bisa datang kalau orang-orang mau bergerak bukan hanya dengan omongan saja.

Dulu, menjelang Soeharto turun orang-orang sudah gelisah, tapi tak banyak yang berani bergerak. Tetapi sekali bergerak, perubahan seperti menjadi tak terkendali, dan perubahan yang tak terkendali bisa menghancurkan misi perubahan itu sendiri, yaitu perubahan yang menjadikan hidup lebih baik. Perubahan akan gagal kalau pemimpin-pemimpinnya hanya berwacana saja. Wacana yang kosong akan destruktif.

Manajemen tentu berkepentingan terhadap bagaimana menggerakkan orang-orang yang tidak cuma sekedar berfikir, tetapi berinisiatif, bergerak, memulai, dan seterusnya. Get Started. Get into the game. Get into the playing field, Now. Just do it!.

Janganlah mereka dimusuhi, jangan inisiatif mereka dibunuh oleh orang-orang yang bermental birokratik yang bisanya cuma bicara di dalam rapat dan cuma membuat peraturan saja. Makanya tranformasi harus bersifat kultural, tidak cukup sekedar struktural. Ia harus bisa menyentuh manusia, yaitu manusia-manusia yang aktif, berinisiatif dan berani maju. Manusia pemenang adalah manusia yang responsif.

Seperti kata Jack Canfield, yang menulis buku Chicken Soup for the Soul, yang membedakan antara winners dengan losers adalah “Winners take action, they simply get up and do what has to be done”.
